At least 41 people have been killed as heavy fighting erupted between government soldiers and armed rebels in the Somali town of Diinsor.

13 of the dead were rebels from a group called Somali Freedom Soldiers - an armed movement vowing to free the war-torn country from what they call the long-standing enemy, meaning Ethiopia - while 28 others were government soldiers.

Reportedly, during the nine-hour battle, the rebels took control of the town, capturing Diinsor completely.

Witnesses say more than 50 government troops have also been wounded during the clashes.

No comments were made by the government on the clashes, Press TV correspondent said.

Meanwhile, in northern Mogadishu, rebels have gunned down five government forces, while seizing their weapons, witnesses said.
