Ethiopia: Imports via Djibouti increase
Ethiopian Ambassador to Djibouti, Shemsedin Ahmed Roble said the amount of goods Ethiopia imports via the Port of Djibouti has increased by 20 per cent due to the economic development registered during the past consecutive years
Ambassador Shemsedin told a team of journalists of ENA that over 3.9 metric tons of goods were imported in the year 1998 E.C. The amount increased to over 4.6 metric tons in 1999 E.C.
The amount of relief grains, which Ethiopia used to import earlier, has decreased while construction materials and goods related to investment flow and infrastructure development significantly increased at present.
The ambassador said efficient systems should be designed to transport the goods from the port into the country as it contributes share in the efforts to speed up development.
Various goods loaded on 15,000 containers are available at the port. Goods are being transferred to other places due to lack of space to keep the goods.
The ambassador called on governmental and private importers to transport their properties into the country. As importers transport their goods into the country, they would be able to save hard currency to be paid for port service.
Ports do not serve as warehouses but they are used to transfer goods. The port has requested importers to transport the goods, which have created congestion.
Ethiopia uses 90 per cent of Djibouti's port services
