Djibouti opposition denounces political repression

Paris, France - The Union for Democratic Changeover of Political Power (UAD), Djibouti's main opposition group, has accused the administration of President Ismaël Omar Guelleh of indulging in acts of "brutal" political repression, ahead of the country's legislative elections on Friday.

In a statement published in Paris Tuesday, the UAD, an umbrella group that includes the Union for Democracy and Justice (UDJ), the Movement for Democratic Revival (MRD) and the Republican Alliance for Democracy (ARD), alleged several leaders had been imprisoned or put under house arrest for attempting to

"Ahmed Youssouf Ahmed, chairman of the ARD, Ismaël Guedi Hared, chairman of the UDJ and Souleiman Farah Lodon, the MRD's vice-chair, are presently under house arrest. Besides, Jean-Paul Noël, chairman of the Djiboutian League of Human Rights (LDDHH), is also under house arrest," the statement said.

According to the UAD, the houses of several members of the opposition have been searched by the security agents, who have also sealed off the district housing the headquarters of the three main opposition political parties.

"It is clear that we are witnessing another serious example of violation of the rights to peaceful expression hardly won by the armed resistance, which has found its historical continuity in the UAD," the statement said.

Last week, the UAD announced it would boycott the legislative elections, explaining that the conditions required to ensure a transparent election were not met
